ORANGE, Calif. - Pacific Lutheran swept the doubles points and
held on in singles play to beat the host Chapman Panthers, 5-4, in
a non-conference men's tennis match played here on Monday.
The win, their first in four spring break matches in California,
improves the Lutes' season record to 9-8. Chapman is now 4-9 for
the season.
PLU swept the Panthers in doubles play to build a crucial
advantage. Joel Trudel and Justin Peterson topped Dylan Tevlin and
Christian Isip, 8-4, on court one, and Michael Manser and Scott
Sheldon whipped Leland Butte and Giovanni Villicana, 8-2, on court
two. The third doubles match was a close one with Brent Smoots and
Tyler Dickey beating Alex Klein and Tyler McCusker, 8-6.
The 3-0 lead was important as Chapman won four of the six
doubles matches. Trudel beat Tevlin, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 singles
match, and Manser got the better of Klein, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 3.
Dickey had a close match with Villicana before losing in a super
tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Pacific Lutheran concludes its spring break trip on Wednesday
with an afternoon match against NAIA opponent Point Loma Nazarene.
