PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran made it 39 consecutive men's tennis dual match victories over Puget Sound with a 7-2 Northwest Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at the PLU courts.
The Lutes (3-7 overall, 2-6 NWC) added to their long string of wins over the Loggers (3-8, 2-5) by taking two of three doubles matches, and then adding five wins in singles play. Puget Sound hasn't beaten the Lutes since the 1992 season.
Scott Sheldon and Taylor Dickey got the Lutes off to a strong start with a dominating 8-0 victory over Scott Finkleman and George Murphy at No. 1 doubles. PLU also picked up a doubles point at No. 3, Zack AhYat and Neal Berg taking the measure of Alex Harrison and Michael Cutter, 8-5.
Puget Sound's doubles point came at No. 2 where Nick Kelley and Chas Stewart topped Michael Parretta and Daniel Cotton, 8-3.
PLU took straight set victories in four of their five singles wins, with Sheldon and Dickey counted among that group. Sheldon beat Cutter, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, and Dickey took down Finkleman, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1. Freshmen Gunstone and Berg got props from PLU head coach Craig Hamilton, who said they played their "best tennis yet" in their straight set wins. Gunstone defeated Harrison, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5, and Berg was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Ben Miller at No. 6.
The Lutes' other singles win came at No. 3, where AhYat beat Stewart in a super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). Puget Sound picked up a win at No. 4, Kelley beating Cotton, 6-3, 6-4.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Linfield, with the match scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on the PLU courts, weather permitting.
