Puget Sound Penalty Kick Ends Lutes' Unbeaten Streak

Box Score

TACOMA – The saying goes that all good things must come to an end, and that held true for the fifth-ranked Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team Saturday as the Lutes took their first loss of the season in a 2-1 Northwest Conference battle against cross-town rival Puget Sound.

Pacific Lutheran's 12-match unbeaten streak to start the season was the longest in program history as the Lutes fall to 9-1-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play with the loss. Puget Sound improves to 9-3 overall and strengthens its position atop the NWC standings with a 7-0 conference mark.

Sean Ryan's fifth goal of the season gave Puget Sound a 1-0 lead right before halftime. He scored the goal off the crossbar following a rebound clear in the 43rd minute. The Lutes responded early in the second half, as Taylor Jackson scored his third goal of the year in the 57th minute. The junior defender headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by Rigoberto Loreto for the freshman's league-leading ninth assist of the season.

The PLU offense put forth a strong press in the second half after Puget Sound outshot the Lutes 4-0 in the first period. PLU finished the second half with a 9-4 shot advantage, forcing UPS goalkeeper Nathan King to make a pair of saves along with Jackson's goal.

Puget Sound's game-winner came in the 79th minute of play, when the officials whistled a foul on PLU in the box and set up a successful penalty kick for Carson Swope. Swope's ninth goal of the year broke the tie and proved to be the difference in the match for Puget Sound.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action next weekend, traveling to eastern Washington to take on Whitman on Saturday and Whitworth on Sunday.
