Rozell nets game-winner in second overtime as Lutes defeat Pioneers 2-1

PARKLAND – Lewis & Clark might have experienced a bit of déjà vu Sunday afternoon, as the Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team knocked off the Pioneers with a double-overtime Golden Goal by Kaylie Rozell for the second time in two meetings this season.

Rozell took a pass from Samantha Benner about 10 yards in front of the goal, and she knocked it past Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Geena Fong to break a 1-1 tie in the 102nd minute of play. The freshman scored the lone goal of the match in the Lutes' 1-0 win over the Pioneers down in Portland last month.

"Going into the day we were one point ahead of them – we were third and they were fourth," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "We knew this was a really important game for the goals for our season."

Pacific Lutheran improves to 8-3-5 overall and 6-1-5 in Northwest Conference play, while Lewis & Clark falls to 9-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the NWC. The Lutes take on cross-town rival Puget Sound next, visiting the Loggers Wednesday with kickoff set for 3 p.m.

Benner gave PLU an early lead, scoring a long goal from the center of the field off a pass from Hannah Bush in the 18th minute of play. The Lutes held that lead until the first minute of the second period, when Isobel Fikso tied it up with a header off a corner kick pass from Emilia Emmetti.

"I was really proud of our team," Benner said. "After they came back and tied it up, we didn't get discouraged. We kept playing and kept playing hard and didn't give up."

Neither team was able to find the net from that point until the second overtime period. The Lutes finished the match with a narrow 12-11 shot advantage as both teams had opportunities to score. Rozell nearly ended it early in the first overtime period, sending a shot to the L&C goal that bounced off the top of the crossbar.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Spidahl said. "It's always a really scrappy battle."
