Lutes down Loggers 3-2 in overtime Senior Day thriller

Box Score

PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran capped its 2013 men's soccer season with a dramatic come-from-behind Senior Day victory over cross-town rival Puget Sound, as Derek Johnson scored an overtime Golden Goal to knock off the 20th-ranked Loggers 3-2 Saturday afternoon at East Field.

The Lutes honored nine seniors – Joe Rayburn, Taylor Jackson, Alex Hurst, Jeff Piaquadio, Johnson, Giancarlo Santoro, Joe Olenginski, Brian Lefavour and Bryce Archambeault – prior to kickoff and sent them out in winning fashion by claiming PLU's first win over NWC champion UPS since 2011. Pacific Lutheran improved to 13-4-3 overall and 8-4-2 in conference play with the win, finishing the season third in the NWC standings. Puget Sound fell to 14-5 overall and 12-2 in the NWC.

"It was an exciting game, a good game, and a great way to cap off our season," PLU head coach John Yorke said.

It took more than 52 minutes for either team to score, but once the Lutes broke through in the 53rd minute the Loggers tied it up only 20 seconds later. Santoro scored his seventh goal of the season to give PLU the brief 1-0 lead, sneaking a shot past UPS goalkeeper Nathan King from about seven yards out off a pass from Jackson.

NWC scoring leader Carson Swope evened it up on a penalty kick before giving the Loggers a 2-1 advantage in the 61st minute off a pass from Sean Ryan. The Lutes came back in the 80th minute to tie it up, as Santoro passed to Diego Aceves in the box for the score that forced overtime.

During the overtime period Johnson finally had his chance to finish it off for the Lutes in his last game at PLU. The Lutes' scoring leader's eighth shot of the night went off the fingers of a diving King and into the net for the Johnson's 13th goal – and fifth game-winner – of the 2013 season. Aceves passed to Johnson on the left side of the box, who made a play on the ball to send the Lutes out as winners.

The teams finished almost completely even in the shot column, with PLU holding a slim 18-17 advantage. PLU finished with nine corner kicks to seven for UPS, and Rayburn concluded his career in goal for the Lutes with six saves. The Lutes were called for 20 fouls in the game compared to eight fouls by the Loggers.

"It was really difficult a lot of the time today to come out," Johnson said. "We had a lot of adversity and a lot of things didn't go our way early. But I know these guys are some of my best friends; the guys that I play with are some of my best friends, and so it's a lot easier to work hard to try to get that last goal in a tough time when you love the guys you're playing with."
