Lutes Fall 4-0 to No. 21 Cal Lutheran to Finish Weekend with 1-1 Record

SPOKANE – Twenty-first-ranked California Lutheran followed Pacific Lutheran's gameplan from Friday as the Regals scored a pair of goals in each half to hand the Lutes their first loss of the season, 4-0 on the final day of the 2013 Whitworth Women's Soccer Classic.

Both teams finish the weekend with 1-1 marks, with the Lutes next set to head to California to take on Occidental and Whittier next weekend in the final matches of the nonconference season.

"Cal Lutheran showed today why they are the three-time defending SCIAC champions," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "Our players got to play against a nationally-ranked and NCAA Tournament team from the past three years. This is where we want r program to be in the future."

California Lutheran's aggressive attack gave the Regals a 14-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman Kaylie Rozell led the way for PLU with a total of three shots and two of the Lutes' four shots on-goal in the contest. Marisa Gonzalez and Takara Mitsui each took a half in goal for the second consecutive match, with Gonzalez tallying four saves in the opening period and Mitsui adding a pair in the second.

Kristina Hulse opened the scoring for California Lutheran, taking a pass from Bianca Deardorff and sliding the ball into the lower-right corner of the goal in the 20th minute. Hulse would prove to be the star of the match for the Regals, tallying a pair of goals and an assist. Nicole Campbell scored in the 39th minute to make it 2-0, while Brittany Erimita tacked one on in the second minute of the second period and Hulse finished it off with a corner kick goal from Yahaira Hernandez in the 82nd minute.

"It was a great experience for our team as we had some major defending lapses, and this is a process we have to go through in order to grow as a team," Spidahl said. "We need to take this game and our developmental areas and get back to work on the training field this week for our trip to California."
