SPOKANE – Whitworth made 10 three-pointers and 28 free throws as the Pirates pulled away from Pacific Lutheran 92-50 in Northwest Conference women's basketball action Friday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Whitworth improves to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the NWC. The Lutes head to Walla Walla Saturday to face fourth-ranked Whitman, with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
Samantha Potter led PLU with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Katelyn Smith added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. The Lutes made 21 of their 48 shots (43.8 percent), but they hit only two of their 11 three-point attempts and were only 6-of-17 at the free throw line.
Kayla Johnson scored a game-high 22 points, while KC McConnell finished with 16 and Kendra Lahue added 11. The Pirates shot 40.9 percent overall (27-of-66), including 50 percent from three-point range (10-of-20). They also made 28 free throws on 32 attempts and forced 32 PLU turnovers.
Potter scored the first basket of the game to give PLU a 2-0 lead, and a minute later Shelly Kilcup converted a three-point play with a layup and a free throw to make it 5-2. Lahue tied it up with a three-pointer, but Smith followed with a bucket to give the Lutes one last advantage at 7-7. Five consecutive free throws by Whitworth put the Pirates on top, and they never looked back as they built a 44-20 halftime lead.
