PARKLAND – Megan Abdo's three-pointer beat the buzzer to force overtime and Pacific Lutheran claimed a thrilling 76-70 victory over Colorado College to conclude the first day of the 2014 Pacific Northwest Tournament at Names Family Court.
Pacific Lutheran improves to 2-3 this season with the win in its 2014-15 home opener, while Colorado College falls to 0-7. The Tigers face Puget Sound Saturday at 4 p.m., with the Lutes capping the tournament with a 6 p.m. tip against UC Santa Cruz. Puget Sound defeated Santa Cruz in the tournament opener on Friday.
Tayler Flemming scored a team-high 19 points to lead a group of five Lutes in double-figures. Jori Hall added 17 points and four steals, while Abdo scored 14 points. Sarah Barnes posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Lacey Nicholson added 10.
Katie Waters tallied a game-high 21 points for Colorado College, while Courtney Tyus scored 14 and added seven steals and six assists. Danielle Davis scored 12 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds.
Colorado College out-shot PLU 41.9 percent (26-of-62) to 36.9 percent (24-of-65), but the Lutes forced 34 turnovers and attempted 45 free throws in the win. The game featured five tie scores and six lead changes.
The Tigers held a 32-23 halftime lead after limiting PLU to 28.6 percent shooting in the first half (6-of-21), and they stretched their lead to a game-high 11 points two minutes into the second period. A seven-point PLU streak midway through the period pulled the Lutes within two at 41-39, and the Lutes took their first lead since the opening minute on Barnes' jumper with 5:45 on the clock.
PLU actually went up by four following a three-pointer by Abdo with three minutes to play, but the Tigers got consecutive baskets to tie it up with two minutes to go. Colorado College claimed its final lead of the game with 34 seconds remaining when Waters' layup made it 58-56, and a free throw by Tyus made it a three-point game with 16 seconds on the clock. Following a PLU timeout Abdo dribbled down to the final seconds of regulation and fired a game-tying three-pointer just before the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Barnes opened the overtime period with a jumper, and Flemming followed with a layup to put PLU up by four. A three-pointer by Nicholson a few minutes later gave PLU an eight-point lead with 2:20 remaining, and a Nicholson free throw made it 69-60 with just over a minute to go. Colorado pulled as close as five points back several times in the final minute, but the Lutes held strong to earn the comeback win.
