Lutes fall 99-60 to hot-shooting Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore. – Seventh-ranked George Fox shot better than 60 percent overall as the Bruins ran away to a 99-60 Northwest Conference women's basketball win over visiting Pacific Lutheran Saturday night at Wheeler Sports Center.

The loss dropped Pacific Lutheran's record to 7-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play, while George Fox improved to 18-1 overall and 9-1 in the NWC. PLU returns home to host No. 3 Whitman next weekend, taking on the Missionaries Friday at 6 p.m. at Names Family Court.

Katelyn Smith made 10 of her 14 shots to score a game-high 21 points for the Lutes, and Megan Abdo scored 17 on 7-of-12 shooting. Samantha Potter led all players with 12 rebounds. The Lutes struggled to find their shooting touch throughout the game, finishing the night at 31.7 percent overall (20-of-63) and only 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from three-point range.

George Fox shot 59.4 percent (19-of-32) while building a 48-29 halftime lead. The Bruins somehow found a way to make an even higher percentage of their shots in the second half, connecting on 19 of 30 overall for 63.3 percent (61.3 percent for the game). They also shot 37.5 percent from long-range in the contest, hitting 6 of 16 shot attempts from beyond the arc. Jami Roos led a quartet of double-digit scorers with 20 points in only 13 minutes of court time for the Bruins.

The teams finished with similar marks from the free throw line, with PLU connecting on 19 of 25 attempts (76 percent) and George Fox making 17 of 23 (73.9 percent). PLU finished the night with two more turnovers than the Bruins (24-to-22), and George Fox grabbed eight more rebounds than the Lutes (41-to-33).
