TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran volleyball began the 2014 season undefeated as a result of its 4-0 performance at the Puget Sound Premier Tournament. In the early match on Saturday, PLU swept Oregon Tech by set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21. In the afternoon contest, the Lutes went on to complete the sweep of cross-town rival Puget Sound with scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-18.
Junior Lucy Capron and senior Samantha North received all-tournament honors. Capron also received Most Outstanding Player recognition.
Next weekend, PLU will travel to California to compete in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational in Thousand Oaks. The Lutes will matchup against No. 19 Claremont Mudd-Scripps and No. 13 Trinity (Texas) on Friday. The action continues on Saturday with games against tournament-host No. 6 Cal Lutheran and the University of Redlands.

PLU completed the sweep over Oregon Tech and held the Owls to a .058 attack percentage in comparison to the Lutes' .214 clip.
Capron finished with a .312 attack percentage, 13 kills and 13 digs. North guided the offense with 31 assists while Michaela Edgers led the Lute defense with nine total blocks. Libero Amber Aguiar tallied 16 digs.
PLU came in strong in the first set, taking an 8-3 advantage and never relinquishing the lead on its way to a 25-15 win. In the second set, Oregon Tech remained in control until PLU's 12-point rally secured its lead on the way to a 25-17 set victory. PLU held Oregon Tech to a -.034 hitting percentage in the second set.
The Lutes took the early lead in the third set, scoring 20 of the first 30 points. Soon after, the Owls found their momentum and with the set point in PLU's favor, the Owls scored three-straight to decrease the deficit to three points. A service error by Oregon Tech would solidify the 25-21 set win for the Lutes and complete the sweep.

The Lutes continued their hot streak with the sweep of Puget Sound in the afternoon matchup. Capron and Cooley led the Lutes with 13 kills apiece. North set up the offense with 31 assists while Edgers led the Lutes with four blocks.
With 35 digs, Aguiar broke the PLU record for most digs in a three-set match. The record was previously set at 32 by Megan Kosel (2007 vs. Linfield) and April Lee (2003 vs. George Fox).
For the Loggers, Shawna Smith led with seven kills, Moira McVicar contributed 13 assists and Rachael Garrison tallied 20 digs.
The first set began with no team leading by more than three points at any time. With the Lutes trailing 8-10, PLU rallied to take the next nine of 10 points, capitalizing on eight attack errors by the Loggers. PLU would eventually take the set 25-17.
PLU quickly jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the second set before UPS rallied back to push a 14-14 tie. The score remained tight from there with PLU slightly pulling ahead only for the Loggers to push another tie at 23 apiece. An attack error by UPS and a service ace by Lutes' Julia Hutchison secured the 25-23 victory.
With the Loggers leading 6-4 in the third set, PLU posted a six-point rally to regain control and carry them to the 25-18 win and the match sweep.
