Lutes claim second straight overtime win with 2-1 victory over Pioneers

PARKLAND – There's something about when the Pacific Lutheran and Lewis & Clark women's soccer teams meet up that just can't be resolved in regulation. The teams headed to double overtime for the fifth straight time in the series before Jamie Hoffman's Golden Goal handed PLU a 2-1 Northwest Conference win Saturday afternoon.

After consecutive draws during the 2012 season, the Lutes picked up two double-overtime wins against the Pioneers in 2013. They made it three straight with Saturday's win, which also gave PLU two consecutive double-OT wins after the Lutes knocked off Pacific on Lauren Larson's Golden Goal last Sunday.

Emily Thompson put Lewis & Clark on the board early, taking a pass from Anna Thorndike about 15 yards out and scoring in the 12th minute of play. It was only the third goal the Lutes have allowed all season. That lead didn't last long, as Larson took the ball off a defender, dribbled to center and shot in her fifth goal of the year.

That proved to be all the scoring for the next 85 minutes, although both teams had chances. The Lutes finished the match with a narrow 14-13 shot advantage and forced Pioneer goalkeeper Geena Fong to make six saves, while PLU's Takara Mitsui saved three balls in the win.

Hoffman clinched the win for the Lutes in the 103rd minute of play, drawing Fong out of the goal on the right side before sending the game-winner past the L&C keeper and into the net.

Pacific Lutheran improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Lewis & Clark fell to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Sunday, hosting George Fox in another NWC matchup with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
