Lewis & Clark's second half comeback leads Pioneers over Lutes

PORTLAND – Pacific Lutheran built a seven-point halftime lead, but Lewis & Clark scored 44 second-half points to earn a 67-60 come-from-behind women's basketball victory over the Lutes in Northwest Conference action Saturday evening at Pamplin Sports Center.

Pacific Lutheran falls to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the loss, while Lewis & Clark improves to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the NWC. The Lutes return home next weekend to host Linfield on Friday at 6 p.m. and Willamette on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Names Family Court.

Jori Hall made eight of her 10 shot attempts to score a game-high 20 points, and Megan Abdo added 11 points and three steals for the Lutes. Ayisat Afolabi led Lewis & Clark with 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to post a double-double. Sarah Anderson scored 14 points, while Miyah Leith tallied 12 and Kaitlin Mathewson added 10.

Pacific Lutheran shot 44.9 percent in the loss (22-of-49), while limiting Lewis & Clark to 37.1 percent shooting (23-of-62). The Lutes held the Pioneers to 27.6 percent shooting in the first half (8-of-29), but Lewis & Clark bounced back to shoot 45.5 percent in the second period (15-of-33).

The game featured 11 lead changes and six tie scores, with each team leading for just over 18 minutes of play. The first period saw 10 of those lead changes as neither team led by more than one possession until the final five minutes of play. A pair of free throws by Abdo put PLU up 22-17, and the Lutes stretched their lead to 30-23 going into the break.

Lewis & Clark worked its way back in the first five minutes of the second period, using an 11-5 run to pull within one at 35-34. The Pioneers took control a few minutes later when a three-pointer by Anderson sparked an 11-1 run that turned a four-point deficit for the hosts into a six-point lead at 45-39.

From that point the Pioneers never allowed the Lutes to draw closer than three points back, with the final 12 minutes seeing the L&C lead bounce between three and eight points. The Lutes' best chance came in the final minute of play, when the Lutes scored six of seven points to pull within three at 63-60 with 36 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the Lutes, they did not score again as Lewis & Clark made four free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
