Pacific's hot shooting carries Boxers over Lutes

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific shot 53.4 percent for the night as the Boxers defeated Pacific Lutheran 88-52 Saturday evening in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at the Stoller Center.

Pacific Lutheran fell to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in conference play, while Pacific improved to 8-11 overall and 4-6 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Tuesday, when they will host cross-town rival Puget Sound in a conference matchup at 6 p.m. at Names Family Court.

Lacey Nicholson made seven of her 11 shot attempts to lead PLU with 16 points. Olivia Cook missed only one of her 10 shots to score a game-high 23 points and added 17 rebounds while narrowly missing a triple-double with nine assists. Nani Ostrom added 18 points and both Sarah Curl and Kaila Johnson scored 10 for the Boxers.

Pacific scored the first nine points of the night as it took more than four minutes before a Bailey Raines jumper put PLU on the board. That jumper sparked an 11-point Lute streak, and the teams kept it close for the next 10 minutes of play.

The final tie of the day came at 23-23 following a pair of Madison Green-Hayward free throws before the Boxers closed the half on an 18-4 run to take a 41-27 lead into the break. An 11-point Boxer streak early in the second period put away any hopes of a PLU comeback as Pacific continued to shoot better than 50 percent in the second half (17-of-32) while the Lutes fell to 30 percent (9-of-30).
