'Real Life Wednesdays' Return as Part of Men's Basketball Program

PARKLAND, Wash. – On Wednesday nights during the basketball season, the Pacific Lutheran University men's team take a step off the court for a lesson in life.  "Real Life Wednesday" has become an integral part of the program in an effort to demonstrate what it takes to be successful in the "real world".

Started in 2014, head coach Steve Dickerson established the program to expose his student-athletes to a variety of successful members of the community who can help guide his athletes in post-collegiate careers.  The program started on Oct. 15 with Brian Riseland, a Microsoft executive and PLU alumni, followed by Vince Holt, President of MRI Network Management Recruiters of Mercer Island.

"These are great kids," Holt to Dickerson after meeting with them.  "I am still struggling with the question, 'what fears did I have after high school?'  Great question.  You have done a wonderful thing for these young gentleman with 'Real Life Wednesdays'."

The goal, according to Dickerson, is for the speakers to share how their passion for their professions has evolved over time, the ups and downs that develop, and their formula for success.

"I have had athletes network and find jobs through this program," said Dickerson.  "It is about helping to set them up for success after graduation."

The list of guests for the 2015-16 year includes a variety of professions from an orthopedic surgeon, a TV sports personality to a biblical scholar.  By showing the student-athletes a cross-section of career paths, they are exposed to a much wider network of possibilities.
