NEWBERG, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team wrapped up its road schedule in dominant fashion Sunday afternoon, defeating George Fox 8-1 in Northwest Conference action at Austin Sports Complex.
Pacific Lutheran's seventh consecutive win improved the Lutes' record to 11-2 in conference play and 15-4 overall. The eight goals scored were the most by the team since an 8-0 win in 2011, and the Lutes set a new team record for most goal scorers in a season with 17, as Troy-Mikal Oliger, Hunter H. Clarke, and Rene Ramos each notched their first scores of the season to help the team pass the previous record of 14 in 1992.
"It wasn't the eight goals themselves that were impressive to me, but that we had the resolve to do the things correctly that allowed us to score those goals," PLU head coach John Yorke said after Sunday's win.
The Lute offense got going early, as Joel Frykholm took a pass from Eddie Na and beat his defender to kick in the first goal of the game in the third minute. While that goal may have caught George Fox off guard, Oliger's first goal of the season in the 10th minute had the Lutes up 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the match as he scored off a pass from Bennett Bugbee.
The Lutes added a third goal soon after, as Na contributed his second assist of the day to Diego Aceves, who scored in the 18th minute on a header for his sixth goal of the season. The Lute offense wasn't close to done, and neither was Na. The reigning Northwest Conference Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week added two unassisted goals in the 54th and 58th minute to boost the Lute lead to 5-0.
Clarke scored his first goal of the year in the 63rd minute to add to the lead off an assist by Oni Mayer. Na then added his third goal of the day in the 67th minute off a pass from Jacob Beck, giving Na a hat trick for the day and giving him seven goals in PLU's past four matches.
"Eddie had a great game today," Yorke said. "Our midfield of Diego, Joel, Troy and Bennett really set the tone of how the day would go."
The Bruins put an end to the Lutes shutout hopes in the 72nd minute, when Jose Becerra booted in a free kick to scratch the surface of their 7-1 deficit. Ramos then scored the first goal of his PLU career in the 82nd minute, as the Lutes outshot the Bruins 22-16 on the way to the 8-1 win.
The Lutes will finish up their 2015 regular season with a chance to also set the team record for wins in a season with a Senior Night match against cross-town rival Puget Sound Saturday at 6 p.m.
"UPS is an outstanding program with great coaches and some dangerous players," Yorke said. "Both teams will be ready to play next weekend, and it should be a fantastic game."
