SALEM – Dylan Foreman was a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point range and scored a career-high 26 points, but the Pacific Lutheran men's basketball team fell to Willamette 64-55 in Northwest Conference action Friday night at Cone Field House.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 7-15 overall and 5-8 in conference play, while Willamette improves to 9-14 overall and 7-7 in the NWC. The Lutes will take on Linfield Saturday at 6 p.m. in the final road game of the season.
Foreman played 37 minutes and tallied his career-best scoring output via 9-of-12 shooting, including the aforementioned perfect performance from long-distance. Unfortunately for Foreman and the Lutes, the rest of the PLU team shot only 28.9 percent (12-of-42) and combined to score 29 points.
Bridger Harlington scored 15 points to lead Willamette, while Brandon Luedtke and Brendon McCullough tied with 14 points apiece. Kyle McNally grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds for the Bearcats. Willamette finished the night with a slightly lower overall field goal percentage than the Lutes (37.2 percent compared to 38.9 percent) and three fewer made three pointers, but the Bearcats attempted 17 more free throws than the Lutes and attempted 10 more than PLU.
Willamette led for the majority of the contest, despite the five tie scores and four lead changes. PLU kept it close for most of the night, trailing 28-26 at halftime after Willamette hit a jumper in the closing seconds to break a 26-26 tie.
The Lutes tied it up again at 36-36 with 13:24 to play, but Willamette scored seven straight points to go up 43-36 midway through the second period. Foreman hit a pair of threes in a one-minute stretch to pull PLU within three, but the Bearcats never let the Lutes closer than that. PLU kept the game within five late, as a Brandon Lester free throw made it 58-53 with 1:20 remaining, but Willamette scored four straight points to end the threat, and the Bearcats closed out the nine-point win.
