Whitworth's scoring runs carry 19th-ranked Pirates over Lutes 68-39

PARKLAND – A 17-point Whitworth run covering the end of the first half and beginning of the second helped the 19th-ranked Pirates pull away to a 68-39 Northwest Conference men's basketball victory over Pacific Lutheran Friday night at Names Family Court.

The loss drops Pacific Lutheran's record to 8-16 overall and 6-9 in conference play, while Whitworth improves to 21-3 overall and 14-1 in the NWC. PLU concludes the 2014-15 season Saturday, when the Lutes will host Whitman on Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

The first 15 minutes of play saw the Lutes overcome an early seven-point deficit to play the Pirates even as the teams tied 24-24 with 5:04 to play in the first period. Consecutive three-pointers by Derek Isaak put the Pirates up six, and a pair of free throws made it 32-24 at halftime.

Pacific Lutheran's scoring drought continued for another five minutes as the Lutes went more than 10 minutes of game time between baskets. By then the Pirates had scored another nine points to go ahead 41-24. A Bryce Miller layup and a free throw by Terrell Williams on the Lutes' next possession finally ended the run, but Whitworth responded with another 12 consecutive points to pull to a 28-point lead midway through the second period.
