Puget Sound takes down Pacific Lutheran 68-49 in cross-town rivalry game

PARKLAND – Puget Sound limited Pacific Lutheran to 32.7 percent shooting for the game as the Loggers defeated the Lutes 68-49 in a cross-town rivalry Northwest Conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Names Family Court.

Pacific Lutheran falls to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play, while Puget Sound improves to 16-3 overall and 7-3 in the NWC. The Lutes have two more games this weekend, as they will host Lewis & Clark on Friday at 6 p.m. and fourth-ranked George Fox on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Jori Hall's 12 points led PLU as the Lutes made 16 of 49 shot attempts in the game. Emily Sheldon led all scorers with 21 points for Puget Sound and added a game-high seven rebounds, while Amanda Forshay tallied 14 points for the Loggers.

Pacific Lutheran opened the night with the first five points and built a 9-2 lead four minutes into play. Puget Sound went on to score 12 of the next 13 points to take a 14-10 lead, and the Loggers led the rest of the way.

A layup by Sheldon stretched Puget Sound's lead to 15 points at 31-16 with 2:19 to play in the opening period before a bucket by Lacey Nicholson initiated a six-point PLU run to end the half. Puget Sound wasted little time extending the lead back into double-figures in the second period, as Katy Ainslie's jumper on the Loggers' first possession pushed the lead back to 11 and UPS used a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to go up 22 points.

Puget Sound went up by as many as 31 points with five minutes to play, but PLU scored 14 of the game's final 16 points to end the night back 19. The Loggers finished the night with a narrow 36-34 rebounding advantage, while UPS shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) for the game.
