Pioneer defense stifles Lutes as PLU falls 58-43

PARKLAND – Lewis & Clark limited Pacific Lutheran to 26.4 percent shooting for the night as the Pioneers defeated the Lutes 58-43 in Northwest Conference women's basketball action Friday evening at Names Family Court.

Pacific Lutheran falls to 4-16 overall and 1-10 in conference play, while Lewis & Clark improves to 7-13 overall and 4-7 in the NWC. The Lutes host fourth-ranked George Fox in their next game, taking on the Bruins Saturday at 4 p.m.

Jori Hall led the Lutes with 12 points and eight rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Ayisat Afolabi tied Hall with 12 points to lead the Pioneers, while Miyah Leith and Sarah Anderson each scored 11.

Lewis & Clark scored the first seven points before a layup by Hall put the Lutes on the board with 16:25 to play in the first half. PLU worked its way back to a 12-12 tie with 7:42 on the clock, but the Pioneers scored 11 straight points a few minutes later and went into the break with a 26-15 advantage.

PLU made its first three shot attempts in the second half, including an and-one three-point play by Tayler Flemming, to pull within six at 28-22, but Leith sandwiched a three-pointer with a pair of layups to score seven straight points for the Pioneers and put Lewis & Clark back up by 13. The visitors scored eight straight points a few minutes later to put the game away.

Pacific Lutheran shot 12 percent in the first period (3-of-25) before rebounding to make 11-of-28 shots after halftime, but for the game that left the Lutes with a .264 overall mark. Lewis & Clark shot 46.2 percent overall (24-of-52). The rest of the stat categories were nearly even, as PLU out-rebounding Lewis & Clark by one, 37-36, and the Lutes finished with 24 turnovers to 21 for the Pioneers.
