Hot second half carries Lutes past Bruins 70-58

PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran shot 53.6 percent in the second half to put away George Fox in a 70-58 Northwest Conference men's basketball victory Saturday night at Names Family Court.

PLU's second consecutive win improved the Lutes' record to 7-14 overall and 5-7 in conference play. George Fox fell to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in the NWC. The Lutes head out on the road next weekend and will visit Willamette on Friday at 8 p.m. and Linfield on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Bryce Miller tied a career record with 15 rebounds and made five of his seven shot attempts to tally 13 points and a double-double to lead the Lutes. Kevin McCrossin made a trio of three-pointers and scored 11 points, while Brandon Lester and Kyle Sawtell each tallied 10 points and Austen Trent Wilson grabbed nine rebounds.

JJ Lacey scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting to lead George Fox, while Johnathan Doutt scored 13 and Brendin Quinn added 10. George Fox shot 52.0 percent in the first period (13-of-25) to build a 33-29 halftime lead, but the Bruins shot only 29 percent in the second half (9-of-31) as PLU outscored George Fox 41-25 after the break.

George Fox led for nearly the entire first period, pushing its lead to as many as nine points early in the game. However the Lutes scored 10 straight points to open the second half as the Bruins went nearly six minutes between baskets and PLU took a 39-33 lead on a three-pointer by Sawtell.

Pacific Lutheran led the rest of the way, but George Fox threatened numerous times. The final Bruin rally pulled within four at 54-50 following a three-pointer by Lacey with 8:36 to play. McCrossin responded with back-to-back threes to push the lead to double-digits, and PLU got buckets by Miller and Terrell Williams to score 10 straight points and go up 64-50 before a Doutt three ended the run. By then the Lutes had enough on the scoreboard to burn time and make a couple clutch layups by Dylan Foreman and Miller to close out the 12-point win.

Both teams struggled shooting for one half and caught fire in the other, as George Fox cooled off in the second period following a hot first half and PLU did the opposite. The Lutes shot 32.3 percent in the opening period (10-of-31) and finished the night at 42.4 percent overall (25-of-59) to 39.3 percent for the Bruins (22-of-56). George Fox made 10 of its 24 three-point attempts (41.7 percent), helping the Bruins remain in the game as PLU out-rebounded the visitors 47-to-27.
