Box Score PARKLAND – Pacific Lutheran's stretch of more than 500 shutout minutes to open the season came to an end in the second period Saturday, as Willamette's Kinsey Keene scored twice to lead the Bearcats to a 2-0 Northwest Conference women's soccer victory over the Lutes Saturday afternoon.
Willamette improves to 1-4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Lutes' first loss of the season drops their record to 4-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NWC. PLU will look to bounce back Sunday afternoon, when the Lutes will wrap up the weekend against Lewis & Clark.
"Credit to Willamette today," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "Their record wasn't great, but they're a much better team than their record, and they made the most of their chances."
Keene finished with four shots on goal out of her six shot attempts as Willamette out-shot the Lutes 16-to-10. PLU goalkeeper Takara Mitsui saved nine shots, but the Lutes' quest for a sixth straight shutout ended in the 56th minute of play. A penalty in the box gave Keene a penalty kick. While Mitsui stopped that shot attempt, Keene took the rebound off the deflection and knocked it in for the 1-0 Bearcat lead.
Keene struck again in the 84th minute of play on a 25-yard shot past two defenders into the back of the net. Jamie Hoffman tallied a team-high two shots for the Lutes, while Emily Sewall picked up the shutout for the Bearcats with five saves in 90 minutes of play.
