TACOMA, Wash. - A six goal outburst made for a memorable Senior Day on Sunday as three seniors tallied goals to guide the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team past Northwest Conference rival George Fox University, 6-2, at East Field.
Diego Aceves opened the scoreline with the senior punching the ball past the keeper on a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Joe Sammartino doubled the Lute lead in the 43rd minute, scoring off a feed from Eddie Na as PLU (10-7-2, 7-5-1 NWC) enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
PLU piled on the goals in the second stanza with Giovanni Brigola opening up the onslaught just 70 seconds into the half off a pass from Tyler Bennett. Clint Absher became the second senior to tally a score, netting a goal in the 49th minute with Na providing another helper before defender Isak Visser tallied his first career goal in his final home game, giving PLU the 5-0 edge in the 65th minute. Eddie Na became the sixth Lute to score, adding to his two assist tally in the 74th minute off a pass from Jackson Moore.
The Bruins (1-14-3, 1-10-2 NWC) added scores in the 78th and 80th minute but was unable to come any closer in a match that saw 21 Lutes see the pitch.
"It was a great way to end the home careers of our seniors," said Head Coach John Yorke. "We played at a great tempo and created a lot of chances. It was extra special to have three of the seniors get goals, including Isak's first of his career."
Jack Rose tallied on save in goal, pitching a shutout in the 62 minutes he played before giving way to Cole Weaver. GFU's Austin Burdick netted 10 saves while allowing six scores in 90 minutes of work.
Lute seniors Jacob Beck, Isak Visser, Diego Aceves, Tyler Bennett, KC Phillips, and Clint Absher were all honored in a pregame ceremony. The six student-athletes have helped the Lutes win 48 games over the last four seasons, while owning a 27-10-4 record at East Field.
"I can't say enough about this senior class and what they have invested into the program. I'm looking forward to one more opportunity to compete with them next weekend."
PLU closes out the 2016 season next Saturday, facing crosstown rival University of Puget Sound at 1:30 p.m.
