Plumb's Three Hits Lead Lutes to 6-0 Victory; Lutes Split Doubleheader with Loggers

PARKLAND, Wash. – PLU Softball took home field for the last time this season Saturday afternoon to face Puget Sound.  Bailey Plumb led the Lutes with three hits as the Lutes finished the day strong with a 6-0 shutout in the second game to split the day. The Loggers earned a 6-3 extra-inning victory in Game 1.

"I think we rebounded well in second game," PLU head coach Lance Glasoe said.  "We had some good opportunities in the first game, but we let them off hook early."

The Lutes began the first game with a strong first inning.  After not letting any runners on base in the top of the first, the Lutes scored two runs off of a double from Nichole Schroeder to take the early 2-0 lead. The Loggers didn't wait to respond, though, scoring two runs in the second and another in the third to take a 3-2 lead.

The Lutes tied things in the fifth, as a Becca Sorensen single gave the Lutes their third run.  The game eventually went into extra innings, and, after a quiet eighth for both sides, the Loggers scored three runs in the ninth, which ultimately allowed them to prevail, 6-3.

After a rough ending to the first game, the Lutes turned the momentum around in the second, scoring in each of the first three innings off of hits from Nichole Schroeder, Amy King, and Plumb to go up 5-0.  Plumb singled again in the fifth to bring another run home, all while the defense controlled the Loggers offense, not allowing them to score.

"We were more composed in the second game," Schroeder said.  "We made routine plays, and backed the pitcher up when we needed to."

The Lutes defense was able to shut the Loggers out in the second game, as Elli Rassbach's pitching helped the team leave four Logger runners on base in the last two innings to get the 6-0 win.

"Elli threw really well in the second game," Glasoe said. "We were able to add onto the lead by making plays when we needed to."

The Lutes will be on the road Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader against the Loggers.
