TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's and women's swimming team opened the 2018-19 season in the pool Friday night in a non- conference dual meet against Division I Seattle University.
"It was a really great night. The team was really excited and had a lot of energy on deck, cheering and being great teammates. We had some really good swims considering we've been training for only three weeks, which was good to see," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "We also had some exciting wins with a very close relay to start the meet and Kacey and Victoria later on."
The women opened with a win in the 200-yard medley relay followed by event wins by
Kaycee Simpson and
Victoria Nguyenle, but it was not enough as the women fell 126-79 to Seattle U. The relay team of
Kiyomi Kishaba, Nguyenle,
Bailey Hamilton, and
Lauren Kearney just out-touched the RedHawks with a time of 1:52.82.
Simpson collected the Lutes' second win of the evening, winning the 400-yard individual medley in 4:44.07. Simpson additionally placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking a time of 59.47. Nguyenle added a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.66.
On the men's side,
Hayden Mortensen led the way for the Lutes finishing runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.18. A second place finish in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays were not enough as the Lutes were bested 146.5 – 39.5.
"It was a nice kick off to the season and I'm excited to coach this team the rest of the way. We're starting to get the ball rolling, pushing hard, and pretty soon we will start to gather momentum and we'll be on a good ride."
Pacific Lutheran returns to the pool for the NWC sprints and relays on October 26 and 27 in Oregon.
