SPOKANE, Wash. - A quick goal set the tone for the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 2-0 victory at the expense of Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University to open up a two-game road swing of eastern Washington.
"I'm delighted with the team today," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "It was one of our best performances over here ever. We out statted them and defended outstanding. I was really happy how we were organized and compact and pressed. We were very clinical in the chances we had. We had a great chance for a third as well and we played 22 players so it really was a team win. We're only half done with the weekend and we've really attacked the second half of the conference season with a 0-0 mentality."
Leah Magee needed just 54 seconds to put the Lutes (7-3-3, 6-2-1 NWC) in the driver's seat, scoring her first goal of the season off a pass from
Liz Griffith. It was Griffith's team-leading fourth assist of the 2018 campaign. PLU continued to press offensively, adding an insurance goal in the 35th minute with
Tasha Tennyson netting her third goal of the year.
Natalie Robinson made one save in goal to collect the clean sheet while the Pirates' (7-3-3, 5-2-2 NWC) Molly Webster made two stops in 90 minutes of work.
"They deserve it. We worked hard and had a great week of training. I'm proud of them that we had a good outcome. We've had some good performances but haven't always necessarily gotten the outcome we were hoping for but really proud of this team's grit and character."
The Lutes are back on the pitch tomorrow at noon, facing Whitman College in Walla Walla.
