Lutes in the Limelight: Sammy Weber

Weber Interview

TACOMA, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran University women's cross country student-athlete Sammy Weber will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Biology.

Weber has run for the cross country team all four years at PLU. She began running cross country when she was in high school, and fell in love with the sport. She found running as a healthy de-stressor to participate in with friends after school.

In the spring, Weber runs and is a team captain for the PLU track & field team. She runs the 10,000-meters, 5,000-meters, and 1,500-meters.

Recently, the cross country team has improved their rank. Incoming motivated freshmen with positive attitudes joined the team this year making everyone work better together as a team. The cross country team has already shown significant improvement in the four meets leading up to the 2018 Northwest Conference Championships. Weber and the team's goal is to improve their rank this year at the conference meet.

"We are at the middle of the pack currently. It's not ideal, but for us it's an accomplishment because we have progressed so much," said Weber.

Last month, cross country hosted their first meet at PLU in three years. This was a big deal for the team, and especially for the seniors, like Weber, who have not seen a meet at PLU since their freshman year.

"It was great to have PLU students there watching us and seeing the progress we have all made," said Weber.

Outside of cross country, Weber is involved in the Outdoor Recreation Club at PLU. She not only participates, but she has been a trip leader multiple times. Her favorite trips to go on are ones that visit the mountains where she is able to either snowshoe and snowboard. Weber is also involved in Student Athletic Advisory Committee on campus. SAAC works to improve the experience of student-athletes on campus. The committee works to bring guest speakers to meetings, to fund food at events, and to participate in community outreach and volunteering.

After graduating from PLU in the spring, Weber would like to work in an analytical lab around the Tacoma area. She would like to continue running, and hopefully join a running club in the area.
