Women's Soccer Smashes Pios, 5-1

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team won its first game of the weekend at East Field on Saturday, netting a pair of goals from Liz Griffith and Kari Mills in a 5-1 victory over Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College.

Griffith found the goal first for the Lutes (10-3-4, 9-2-2 NWC), scoring two goals within 6 minutes. The first goal Griffith beat the goalie and found the net unassisted in the third minute. Ellie Johnson completed the assist for the second goal in the seventh minute. The Lutes maintained a majority of the possession for the first half with four shots to the Pioneers' (3-13-2, 1-12-1 NWC) three shots. Lewis & Clark snuck on teh board in the 34th minute with Anna Saucedo scoring on a corner kick as the Lutes owned a 2-1 lead at the half.

The second half started with even play between the two teams. Kari Mills found the third and fourth goal for the Lutes beginning in the 69th minute. Her second goal of the game she found individually off of a corner kick in the 75th minute. The fifth and final goal was scored by Tasha Tennyson, assisted by Alyssa Carter in the 79th minute, extending PLU's unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2).

"(Head Coach) Seth Spidahl told us that we'd get a chance to score in the first five minutes and that we needed to be ready for the ball to come to us. I'm just glad that I was ready for the ball to come to me when it did and finish two great set ups by my teammates," said Griffith. "I think the more important piece to take away from today was our team response in the second half with three goals and awesome team defending after not finishing the first half how we would have liked to. I'm excited to finish out the season on the field surrounded by my best friends with everything to play for."

The Lutes are back on the turf tomorrow at noon, facing Pacific University. The program will honor its eight seniors prior to kickoff.
