TACOMA, Wash. - Phoebe Bunn netted her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute as the two-time defending Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 double overtime draw against NWC leader Willamette University on Saturday at East Field.
"Today was a gutty performance. Willamette's a good team, they haven't lost all year and they have a lot of confidence right now in what they're doing so it was a tough opponent at home," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl.
The game was scoreless through the opening 57 minutes of play before the visiting Bearcats (9-0-2, 5-0-2 NWC) got on the scoreboard in the 58th minute with a goal from Shanna Keil. The Lutes (6-3-3, 5-2-1 NWC) responded in the 75th minute with
Ellie Johnson finding Bunn in the 75th minute for the equalizer.Â
Neither team was able to break the deadlock over the final 15 minutes of regulation in addition to the two 10-minute overtime frames, settling for the tie.
PLU outshot Willamette 13-9 and enjoyed a 7-3 edge in corners taken.Â
Natalie Robinson tallied four saves in net for the Lutes in 110 minutes of action while WU's keeper, Kristen Barclay turned away five shots.
"I'm proud of the team to come back and at least get a draw out of it. We played a tough game emotionally and physically on Thursday against UPS so we weren't as fresh as we could have been but no excuses and the women came out and found a way to at least draw level. There's good ties and there are bad ties. This was a good tie and the team showed a lot of character. It keeps us alive for our conference aspirations and we have everything to play for in the second half of the season."
The Lutes are back on the road next Saturday, traveling to Spokane, Washington to face Whitworth University.Â
