TACOMA, Wash. – A sweep of doubles play for the second consecutive day set the table for another non-conference victory for the Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis squad on Saturday, downing Willamette University 7-2 at the Lakewood Racquet Club.
Justin DeMattos and Chan Thourk breezed to the 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles while the Lutes' (2-2) No. 1 tandem of Niko Convento and Jake Kim took down the Bearcats' (0-3) Aaron Schechter and Colin Fisher by an 8-3 scoreline. John Woelfel and Branson Near battled hard at No. 3, edging out Luke Hiserman and David Liang, 8-6, to complete the sweep.
"We seized the momentum for the second day in a row," said Head Coach Matt Look. "I'm really pleased with how our doubles teams are gelling right now. It allows us to play looser in the singles matches."
In singles, Convento rolled Schechter, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 while DeMattos claimed the, 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 2. Thourk emerged with a, 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 4 while Woelfel tallied a, 6-0, 6-4, win at No. 6.
"The work we've been putting in showed this weekend and we're looking to ride this wave into the upcoming conference matches."
The Lutes return to the courts next Saturday, opening up Northwest Conference play by hosting George Fox University at 1 p.m. at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
