LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team collected its second consecutive victory on Sunday afternoon, dispatching non-conference rival Bellevue College 6-3 at the Lakewood Racquet Club.
"What an exciting match against a Bellevue team that is a defending conference champion," said Head Coach Matt Look. "The doubles had some twists and turns, and huge credit to John and Branson for saving a match points, playing a great tiebreaker, before ultimately giving us the edge heading into singles."
Niko Convento and Jake Kim tallied the victory in doubles play for the Lutes (4-5), downing the Bulldogs' (0-1) No. 1 team by an 8-2 scoreline. Branson Near and John Woelfel pulled out all the stops at No. 3, emerging with the 9-8 win.
In singles, Convento rolled to a, 6-2, 6-2, victory at No. 1 while Chan Thourk rallied for the, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 4. Branson Near won, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 5 with John Woelfel walking away with a, 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 6.
"We played well across the board in singles and stayed with the game plan. It was a good match for us getting ready for the sceond half of our conference matches."
The Lutes return to action next Saturday, hosting crosstown rival University of Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
