LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis squad asserted its dominance over crosstown rival University of Puget Sound for the second time this season, blasting the Northwest Conference rival 7-2 on Saturday at the Lakewood Racquet Club.
"We set a goal this week to set the tone in the doubles matches," said Head Coach Matt Look. "The guys played well across the board to get off to a fast start."
The Lutes (5-5, 2-3 NWC) were flawless in doubles play, winning all three matches. Niko Convento and Jake Kim dispatched the Loggers' (0-9, 0-5 NWC) Joe McRoberts and Riley Inn by an 8-5 scoreline at No. 1 while John Woelfel and Branson Near prevailed by an identical score at No. 3. Justin DeMattos and Chan Thourk made quick work of the opposition at No. 2 doubles, breezing to the 8-3 win.
In singles, Convento netted his fifth consecutive victory at the No. 1 position, downing McRoberts, 6-2, 6-2, while Kim toppled Joshua Wah-Blumberg, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3. Thourk collected his third consecutive win, coming away with a, 7-6, 6-4 decision in his favor while Woelfel earned his third straight win at No. 6, rolling, 6-1, 6-1.
This is the Lutes' second victory over the Loggers this season, collecting an 8-1 non-conference win back on Feb. 23.
"It's great to begin our spring break with a win, and we're ready for the upcoming matches in Oregon and California."
The Lutes return to the courts tomorrow morning, facing Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon before playing three matches in California beginning on Tuesday. Sunday's NWC match gets underway at 11 a.m.
