LA MIRANDA, Calif. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team opened its spring break tour of California on Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-0 to host Biola University.
"We started a little slow today but managed to put up some resistance in the doubles matches," said Head Coach Matt Look. "Even though we're playing some strong teams down here, we have to believe in our game plans, and continue our path of improving every time we step on the court."
The Lutes (5-7) hung tough in all three doubles matches, with Jake Kim and Niko Convento falling 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Justin DeMattos and Chan Thourk battled hard in an 8-4 setback to the Eagles' (4-10) No. 2 squadron while John Woelfel and Branson Near kept things close before ending up on the wrong side of an 8-6 scoreline at No. 3.
In singles, Convento saw his six match win streak come to a close, falling, 6-4, 7-5, to Philip Westwood in a tightly contested match at the No. 1 position. DeMattos was foiled, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 while Thourk fell by a, 6-3, 6-0, scoreline at No. 4.
"There was some good tennis played today and we'll need to be better at stringing shots, points, and games together."
The Lutes are back in action tomorrow afternoon, facing California Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.
