TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team wrapped up its 2017-2018 home slate on Saturday, suffering a 7-2 setback to Northwest Conference leading Whitman College at the Sprinker Recreation Center.

"We played a good match today, but came up a bit short in key moments," said Head Coach Matt Look. "I'm glad we were in a close match against a good team. We need to keep putting ourselves in these situations so we can learn how to get over the hump."

Niko Convento and Jake Kim prevailed 9-8 at No. 1 doubles, edging the Blues' (10-7, 7-0 NWC) top tandem of Rajul Chikkalingalah and Luke Targett by the slimmest of margins. Justin DeMattos and Chan Thourk battled hard at No. 2 before ultimately coming up short 8-4 while John Woelfel and Branson Near were edged 8-6 at No. 3.

In singles, Convento tallied the, 6-3, 6-3, victory at No. 1 while Thourk pushed things to a third set before ultimately falling short, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 4, while Kim fell, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3.

"Niko continues to play great tennis, and it's starting to seep into his doubles matches as well. It was also great to honor Chan and John on Senior Day, and hats off to Whitman for their show of class in recognizing both of them."

The Lutes are back on the court tomorrow morning, heading north to take on Bellevue College at 10 a.m.
