SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A goal early and a goal late proved to be too much to overcome for the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team on Sunday, stumbling 2-0 to Emory University to close out the Lutes' road trip to the Lone Star State.
The Eagles' (2-0) Caroline Kolski opened the scoring in the ninth minute, finding the back of the net off a feed from Lindsey Breskow. Emory maintained a slim 1-0 edge until the 87th minute when Abbe McCarter tacked on an insurance score with Caroline Moore earning the assist.Â
"Overall I was hoping for one positive result this weekend, I knew it was going to be a tough challenge for our team," said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "As good as Trinity was on Friday I thought Emory was even better. They out-statted us and that's a good athletic team. We didn't get off to a great start but we found ourselves.
Danielle Lisk,
Kate Peterson and
Emma Hunter came in and helped us with our energy."
It was a busy day in net for goalkeeper
Natalie Robinson, collecting nine saves on the day while her counterpart, Danielle Staffin, tallied the clean sheet after making three stops.
PLU (0-1-1) finished with six total shots with
Rachel Ross and
Leah Magee each credited with two shots apiece.
"We tried to push up and change the system to get a goal late in the game and they made us pay for it with a late goal but the objective is to get a goal so if you lose 1-0 or 2-0 it doesn't really matter."
The Lutes return to the pitch on Friday afternoon, welcoming the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to East Field for the home opener. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
"It was a tough trip, it was hot and the team's were hard but we need that. I'd rather struggle early and grow and that can't happen unless we get out of our comfort zone."Â
