Box Score Box Score

SALEM, Ore.- The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis squad wrapped up its fall season on a positive note, edging Willamette University 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Lutes (1-0) got things rolling early, winning two of the three doubles matches. Michael Campbell and Marcus Lee steamrolled the Bearcats' (0-1) Gene Perie-Jones and Colin Fisher, 8-1, at No. 2 while Jamin Perry and Branson Near prevailed at No. 3 by an identical 8-1 scoreline.

"Doubles duos Lee/Campbell and Perry/Near dominated. Michael and Branson had solid straight set wins and Justin closed out the team win in a tough three-set battle. All in all we had a great team win with everybody competing well," said Head Coach John Campbell. "Michael set the tone at No. 1 singles and Branson really played well and controlled the match from the beginning. I'm proud of how we battled to get the win."

PLU showed its strength at the top of the lineup in singles with Campbell and Justin deMattos both picking up victories. Campbell downed Andrew Kabacy, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position while deMattos battled to a, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, win at No. 2. Branson Near was the Lutes' third victor in singles play, vanquishing Luke Hiserman, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5.

Sunday was the Lutes' final competition of the fall. PLU will pick up the rackets again on Feb. 2, batting crosstown rival University of Puget Sound before facing Division I Seattle University the following day.
