Johnson Tallies Two Again As Lutes Overpower Boxers, 3-1

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Ellie Johnson continued to be a one woman wrecking crew in Oregon, scoring two goals in a two minute stretch to power the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Pacific University in a Northwest Conference tilt on Sunday at Hanson Stadium.

Johnson netted the game's opening goal in the 22nd minute off a cross from Leah Magee before doing it again just one minute and 39 seconds later with Magee again crossing the ball to Johnson to stake an early 2-0 advantage.

"It was a physical game today and kind of chippy, so we had to deal with that. Credit to Ellie being at the right place at the right time but Leah did a lot of the work with two great assists. Ellie had to be there to finish it but Leah did a lot of the prep work and deserves some credit," said Head Coach Seth Spidahl.

The homestanding Boxers closed within one with a goal in the 59th minute but Liz Griffith cemented the Lutes' fifth consecutive win with a goal in the 81st minute with Maddie Landreth netting the assist.

"We defended well and I was proud of the team because it was a physical game and we didn't start the second half how we wanted to start. We gave up a goal, it was a very good goal on their part but it went to 2-1 and there's a lot of ways the game could have gone but we showed some good character and toughness and found that third goal on a really good free kick."

PLU dominated the stat sheet, enjoying a 20-2 edge in shots, including 12 of the 13 directed on goal.

Natalie Robinson earned the victory in goal, logging all 90 minutes between the posts while her counterpart, Saya Brown, made nine saves in the losing effort.

"It was a good test on the road. Forest Grove can be a tough place to play so I'm proud of the team. Definitely a shout out to Emily Sugimoto, she put in some great minutes and so did Kate Peterson, bringing in good energy off the bench."

Sunday was the second consecutive match Johnson found the back of the net twice, doing so at the expense of Lewis & Clark College in Saturday's 2-0 win.

The Lutes are back on the pitch on Wednesday, making teh short trip across town for the annual Battle of the South Sound against the University of Puget Sound.
