TACOMA, Wash. - Madison Salisbury piled on a game-high 21 points while
Emma Janousek finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double as the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team capped off its homestand with a 66-59 victory over Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Saturday afternoon inside Olson Gymnasium.
The opening quarter was touch and go with neither team able to pull away. Pacific Lutheran (11-3, 4-2 NWC) enjoyed a 13-11 lead after 10 minutes of play before exploding in the second quarter, outscoring the Boxers (6-9, 0-6 NWC) 17-6 in a quarter that saw Pacific hit just 18.2 percent (two-for-11) of its shots from the floor. A four-point lead quickly ballooned to a 15-point buffer for the Lutes, courtesy of a 11-0 run midway through the quarter. PLU would enjoy a 30-17 lead at the half before seeing the advantage swell to 21 in the third quarter.
Pacific did its best to get back into the game. closing within single digits with 4:35 left in the game but was unable to get closer than seven as PLU held on for its third consecutive win.
"That was a big win for our program," said Head Coach
Jennifer Childress. "Pacific's record doesn't reflect how good of a team they are. At any moment they can turn their offense on and get hot."
Salisbury drained eight of her nine shots from the floor and finished with a game-high 21 points while also hauling in six rebounds. Janousek added 10 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, while
Kristin Sturdivan added 12 points.
Katie Taylor chipped in 14 off the bench while
Anna Hurd contributed seven points and seven boards.
"We're proud of how we played a consistent and composed game. Emma was our engine today and her court management was on point. Madison adjusted well to their focus on her in the paint and just out ran them in transition. Our guards also had a great night shooting and hit some big threes when we needed some breathing room."
PLU dominated the glass, enjoying a 42-24 rebounding edge while finishing the game shooting at a 48.9 percent (23-for-47) clip.
The Lutes hit the road next weekend, trekking across the state to face Whitman College on Friday in Walla Walla.
