WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team saw its three game win streak come to a halt on Friday night, falling 91-50 to 24th-ranked Whitman College in a Northwest Conference clash inside the Sherwood Center.
The homestanding Blues (12-3, 7-0 NWC) scored the opening bucket with
Emma Janousek answering with a jumper of her own to tie the game just 40 seconds into the contest. Whitman would answer with 19 of the next 21, seizing a 21-4 advantage with 2:27 left in the opening quarter. That initial surge was more than enough for the Blues to secure the win, building a 49-29 halftime edge en route to the victory.
"We needed to be more physical and aggressive. Plain and simple," said Head Coach
Jennifer Childress. "Being tentative on defense opened the floodgates for their hot shooting. They earned the loose balls and the 50-50 rebounds by being more aggressive. It was a wake up call. To get to the top half of this conference, we have to go back to our consistent intensity on defense and not take plays off."
Katie Taylor powered the Lutes (11-4, 4-3 NWC) with 12 points, draining three treys on the night while Janousek added eight points.
Lauren Furu and
Madison Salisbury each added six points while
Kylie Rademacher led the team with four rebounds.
The Lutes are back on the hardwood tomorrow at 4 p.m., facing Whitworth University in Spokane.
