TACOMA, Wash. - A milestone was set last weekend as the two-time defending Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team was busy dominating in-state foes Whitworth University and Whitman College with longtime assistant coach
Jamie Bloomstine manning the sidelines for his 400th career game on the Lute coaching staff.
Bloomstine bleeds black and gold through and through. He was a member of the Lutes men's soccer program from 1992-1995 and holds three degrees from the University. He's coached under three different regimes and has been a mainstay on the sidelines continuously since the 2000 season.
Bloomstine was a standout for the Lutes in college, playing under Jimmy Dean from 1992-1995. His playing days saw the Lutes make two trips to the NAIA National Tournament while winning the NWC title in 1992. Bloomstine was a big reason for that success earning First Team All-Conference and All-Region as a junior and senior. He racked up 31 goals in his time on campus and was drafted in the third round of the 1995 A-League draft by the Vancouver 86ers.
His first degree from PLU was conferred in 1996, earning a bachelor of arts in communication. Bloomstine's first stint on the coaching staff would come a year later, joining Dunn's staff in 1997, a season the Lutes would finish with a 14-6-2 record.
Bloomstine's second season on the Lute coaching staff wouldn't be until 2000, joining Joe Water's staff. Bloomstine would be a staple with the squad ever since. During that time, Bloomstine amassed a Master of Arts degree in 2001 and tacked on a BA in history in 2005 for good measure. His career record as an assistant is an impressive 224-151-25.
His tenure has seen the Lutes win three NWC titles, make two NCAA Tournaments, and finish in the top four of the NWC standings in all but three of his 21 seasons on staff.
Bloomstine's longevity and ability to mesh with both the student-athletes and other coaches has been key to the program's success, a luxury that isn't lost on current Head Coach
John Yorke who took over the program in 2002.
"I inherited Jamie when I came here. The Athletic Director at the time asked me whether I'd keep him on. I didn't really know him at the time but I said 'yeah, absolutely,'" said Head Coach
John Yorke.
"He's a guy that loves PLU and PLU men's soccer. He's very detail oriented and does a lot of things in our program that are the little things that need to get done and probably aren't my strength. He's a guy all the guy's like and he's been a real positive piece to our program."
That partnership has blossomed with Yorke and Bloomstine combining for 199 wins over the past 18 seasons.
"He knows the things I want to get done, I know what I can depend on him for. The roles are really defined and he's a really great servant of the program."
Yorke and Bloomstine will search for their 200th win together this weekend, beginning on Saturday as the Lutes host Linfield College at east Field with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
