TACOMA, Wash. -Â The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team will look to continue its historic winning streak this upcoming weekend as they play host to George Fox University on Saturday and Willamette University on Sunday for Senior Day.
Â
The Lutes (14-1-1, 12-0 Northwest Conference) continued their unbelievable win-streak last weekend as they came out 2-0 victors against Lewis & Clark College (6-8-2), and 4-0 victors against Pacific University (3-11-1). This marks an amazing accomplishment for this Lutes team, breaking the previous school record with 13 straight wins. This past weekend also marks the 13th clean sheet of the season for the team, making it six clean sheets in a row and showcasing the dominant defense.Â
Â
"It is a nice feeling to know that our team has a record like 13 straight wins, considering all of the great PLU teams that have come before us," said senior defender
Sarah Burns. "I don't think any of us were aware of how close we were until we started to see the articles on it. At the end of the day though, the streak is nice, but our goal is to win conference and go into the post season playing soccer at our highest level."
Â
"This was one of our first home weekends in a while, so we were excited to come out and play in front of our family and friends cheering us on. We didn't play up to our standards on Saturday and we knew that, so our team really came together on Sunday and played outstanding against Pacific. It was a good team win and we will take lessons away from this weekend that can be put towards next season."
Â
As a senior, Burns has experienced many great times with her teammates through the PLU program which she will cherish for a long time.
Â
"It is tough to pick out my favorite moment so far at PLU because I have been lucky to have experienced so many amazing opportunities. Right now, the most memorable moment was my junior year when our team traveled to Pennsylvania to play Messiah who was ranked 2nd in the nation. We played under the lights and their fans were really intense. As a player, that is an environment that brings out the best in you and you can't help but get yourself hyped up to play. That was my first start and something I'll never forget."
Â
This season has been so exciting for Burns and the other girls on the team, and she is definitely looking forward to the short remainder of the season.
"As the season progresses, I am looking forward to enjoying my last moments as a student-athlete. I get to be around my friends and mentors every day and compete at a high level. That is something really special to me, so I want to embrace every moment I have left."
Burns is also working very hard in the classroom as she prepares for graduating this upcoming spring.
"I am a double major in Biology and Kinesiology. I plan to go to graduate school in the health sciences area. I am unsure of my exact focus right now, but I hope to take a gap year to work, travel, and figure out what I want to do."
Â
"My mom is a nursing instructor, so I think I started to become interested in the sciences from hearing her talk about it at home. Sometimes she would let me take the quizzes she gave her students and that made me want to learn more about the human body."
Â
The team is preparing hard to compete this weekend, in hopes of extending their record-breaking season.
Â
"I think our team can prepare for this weekend by focusing on the details. If we can win our 1v1 battles and keep up our tenacity in front of goal, I think things will go well. Our defense has been relentless, and our offense has been steadfast, so it is exciting to see the potential this team has."
Â
The Lutes are looking forward to this weekend with extra significance, with Senior Day coming up on Sunday. The team will host George Fox University on Saturday Nov. 2nd at 12 p.m. and Willamette University on Senior Sunday, Nov. 3rd at 12 p.m.Â
Â
"Senior day will be bittersweet. It will represent all of the relationships our class has made with our teammates this season. Our team dynamic is really special and something that I will miss when the season is over. If we can come out with a fast start, I think we will have a good chance to win on senior day and end our last time on East Field with a W. I want to thank all the players and coaches on the team for making this year amazing so far. You guys are what make me want to be a better player and teammate. I can't wait to see where we go!"
