TACOMA, Wash. – For the second straight day, the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team celebrated an overtime, game-winning goal. After yesterday's victory over George Fox, the Lutes'
Ellie Johnson put home a rebound in the second overtime to lift PLU to a 1-0 victory over Willamette University on Senior Day at East Field.
In the 106
th minute, senior
Leah Magee drove deep into Bearcat territory and crossed a ball into the box for
Kari Mills. Mill's shot was saved by Willamette keeper Kristen Barclay, but Johnson was at the right place at the right time to provide the game-winner.
PLU was in serious danger in the first overtime. After a corner kick by the Bearcats, Gena Main headed the ball past the Lute keeper
Cassidy Crosswhite, but it was Magee who kept the game alive and stopped the ball as it headed towards the goal line. Magee attempted to clear the ball, but a foul on PLU gave the Bearcats a free kick just outside the box. Shanna Keil took the free kick for Willamette, which was blocked by the Lute wall, but it went directly to Annie Storm, who launched a shot just above the crossbar with three minutes left in the first overtime.
The Lutes (16-1-1, 14-0-0 NWC) had multiple chances for goals throughout the match, but couldn't find the back of the net on their first 18 shots. Magee led the team with five shots, while
Tasha Tennyson had three. Barclay made six saves to keep the score tied, while Crosswhite needed to make just one to earn her fifth shutout of the year and 14
th of the season for PLU. The Lutes have outscored their opponents 36-4 on the year and 32-2 in conference play.
Sunday's win was the 15
th in a row for the team, which is a new school record. The Lutes will wrap up the regular season next week when they host the University of Puget Sound on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and then head to Linfield on Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff at Linfield.
With their fourth straight NWC title already sealed, the Lutes will head to their third NCAA Tournament in the last four seasons at the end of the regular season.
