TACOMA, Wash. - After a series of weather related postponements, the Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team is back in action on Sunday, traveling to face Pacific University in a non-conference dual match.
The Lutes (2-0) opened the spring on Feb. 2 with a 9-0 win over crosstown rival University of Puget Sound. Highlighting the win was freshman Michael Campbell who won Northwest Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 4 after winning both his No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches against the Loggers. Campbell, a Lacey Washington native is excited to be back on the court after matches last Saturday and this Saturday at the Sprinker Rec Center have been postponed due to weather.
"I am definitely looking forward to playing matches again. I feel like our team is way more prepared now compared to the fall,"said Campbell. "Our team has been putting in the hours and it's clearly paying off."
The hard work from the off season is a result from a team drive to compete. This year the tennis team set a clear a simple goal.
"The team goal this year is simple, be top four in the conference."This would give the team a chance to make it to postseason. Personally, Campbell's goal is "simply to win or compete in every match I play this year."
When not on the court, Campbell is interested in other sporting events.
"Outside of tennis I'm mainly interested in following other sports like basketball or professional tennis. I also enjoy playing games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate or watching shows like Game of Thrones."
Campbell is using his time as a freshman to figure out what he wants to do academically as he is currently undecided.
With another weekend coming up, Campbell's focus is on the next competition in front of him.
"I felt my performance and the team's performance was very solid. I was very surprised but honored to receive the NWC player of the week," said Campbell. "I feel like being a freshman makes no real difference. Just putting in the time and being put into the right situation has allowed me to have some success."
Campbell and the Lutes look forward to another successful weekend ahead as they take on Pacific on Sunday at 10 a.m.
