TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's tennis team will play its final match of the regular season on Saturday against cross-town rivals University of Puget Sound.
The Lutes (4-11, 1-6 Northwest Conference) are coming off a tough trip across the cascades where they suffered setbacks to both Whitworth University and Whitman College. The trip wasn't without some success, asÂ
Jake Kim and
Branson Near were able to pull out victories in their singles matches against Whitworth.
As the team prepares for the final match of the regular season, we talked with freshman
Derek Stone about what the team is looking for in their final outing.
"We're having a pretty casual week. Playing each day with the team getting ready to have a competitive match with our crosstown rivals UPS."
Stone is an Anchorage, Alaska native who graduated from Dimond High School. He is studying economics and also competes on the Lute men's soccer team that won a NWC title in the fall.Â
He talked a little about transitioning from soccer to tennis saying, "It was a big change. Both sports in their respective ways are difficult and they compliment each other very well. Despite not participating in the fall with tennis the team has been very outgoing and helped me transition easily."
As the Lute's tennis season approaches its end, Stone took some time to reflect.
"As a team we got to go to California over spring break and that was a blast! We stayed right next to the beach and spent plenty of time training there as well as tennis all day in the sun"
The Lutes will be in action for the final time on Saturday. Matches will begin at 10 AM at UPS. Â
