REDLANDS, Calif. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team wasted little time in California on Saturday night. Just 25 seconds into the match,
Leah Magee found
Tasha Tennyson and the junior forward beat the University of Redlands goalkeeper to propel the Lutes to a 1-0 non-conference victory over the previously unbeaten Bulldogs.
"The biggest thing I'm proud of is the character that we showed and the physical resolve that we had to defend well when we were under a lot of pressure in the second half," said PLU Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "We got an early goal and although we had some moments to get a second goal, we did defend a lot. It wasn't the prettiest game, but I'm proud of the toughness and warrior spirit our team showed. It's a big way to finish our four-game road trip."
The Lute (2-1-1) offense was held to just five shots total and placed two on goal, but Tennyson's was all they needed. It was the junior's first goal of the season and it was also Magee's first assist of the year. Magee continues to lead PLU in points with five in four games.
Ashton Huppert and the rest of the defense was tested all game as the Bulldogs ripped 12 shots on the evening and forced the junior to make five saves.
Tennyson added the Lutes' other shot on goal, while Magee nearly made the score 2-0 in the second half, but her shot that beat the Redlands keeper clanged off the crossbar and away from danger.
Saturday's victory closes the non-conference slate for the Lutes. PLU has two weeks off before they host Whitworth University for the home opener at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 to begin Northwest Conference action.
