TACOMA, Wash. – For the first time this fall, the 18
th-ranked Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team has finished on the wrong end of the scoreboard, falling to University of Puget Sound 1-0 on Wednesday evening in overtime.
"It was a great environment for our team," said PLU Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "It was a tough, fast, physical college soccer environment. UPS came out and started strong and really kind of set the tone, but I'm proud of how are team grew into the game. It was a very disappointing outcome. To suddenly lose in overtime, it's kind of like a shock. I thought we got better and better as the game went along."
After over 99 minutes of scoreless action in Baker Stadium, the Loggers broke the tie on an unassisted goal by Radhika Webster Shultz. The goal ended the PLU's three-match shutout streak at three games and it was the first time all season that the Lutes were held scoreless. The loss also broke the Lutes' 10-match winning streak to start the season and six-match run in Northwest Conference play.
"I think our team needed this today," said Spidahl. "We needed a real big challenge and I think we will grow from it. That's our job now to take what we've learned and do better. We still have nine conference games left and everything to play for. There's a ton of soccer left. Like I told the team after the game, going 20-0 would be awesome, but the reality is you are probably going to have a hiccup here and there. If our hiccup is losing at UPS, which is a very good program, 1-0, in overtime, then we will take that.
PLU's vaunted defense, which had allowed just two goals all season prior to today's match was under constant pressure. The Loggers had 16 shots and placed 10 of them on goal. Senior keeper
Calie Rose made five stops and the rest of the defenders made four team saves, all in the second half.
The Lutes (10-1, 6-1 NWC) produced seven total shots on the afternoon with
Vera Panescu-Reich leading the way with three of the four shots on goal.
PLU will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host George Fox University at 12:00 p.m.
