Box Score TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team got back in the win column on Saturday, defeating George Fox University 2-1 at East Field. With the victory, the Lutes picked up three points in the Northwest Conference race and leapfrogged University of Puget Sound for the top spot in the standings.
"I knew it was going to be a bit of a grind for us to get through today's game," said PLU Head Coach
Seth Spidahl. "The team showed a lot of grit and character to hang on. We had a very timely goal at the end of the first half.
Keila Kruse kept it alive and AJ ran with some good intensity and had a good finish.
Sawyer Anderson scored her first goal. Other people stepped up on the day, when they haven't had to in a while. Overall I'm proud of the maturity this team showed. We're a really young team, but we don't use that as an excuse. A baby shark is still a shark. The real journey begins in the second half now that we've all played each other."
All three goals this afternoon were scored in the first half. PLU got on the scoreboard first when
Ellie Reardon found
Sawyer Anderson off of a corner kick in the 22
nd minute. It was Reardon's team-leading sixth assist on the season, while it was Anderson's first career goal.
After the defense allowed just its fourth goal of the year, the home team wasted little time reclaiming an advantage. Just four minutes after the Bruins lit the scoreboard,
Keila Kruse assisted on
Alyssa Jordan's game winner in the 44
th minute.
Calie Rose picked up the win in goal for PLU after making four saves on the afternoon.
The Lutes (11-1, 7-1 NWC) will head east next weekend when they take on Whitworth University on Saturday and Whitman College on Sunday. Both kickoffs are scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
