SPOKANE, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University and Whitworth University women's soccer teams battled for 110 minutes at the Pine Bowl on Saturday, but both defenses were outstanding and neither offense was able to score in the 0-0 tie.
The Lutes nearly won the match in the final five minutes when
Alyssa Leong crossed the ball to
Lily Dose, who's header was on target, but was stopped by Pirate keeper Rachel McGlothlen. With just 89 seconds left in the first overtime, Dose had another golden opportunity to end the contest, but her free kick sailed high.
PLU (0-2-1, 0-2-1 NWC) fired 14 shots to Whitworth's (0-0-1, 0-0-1 NWC) 8 and placed three more shots on goal. Dose and
Maddie Landreth led the game with three attempts a piece, while
Kimber Thomas and
Ellie Johnson had two each for the visitors.
Great team defense forced keeper
Ashton Huppert to make just three saves to earn the shutout.
The Lutes will look to come home from Spokane with the squad's first victory of the season when they battle the Pirates again tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
