SPOKANE, Wash. - A goal in each half was more than enough firepower on Sunday for the four-time defending Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team, rolling past host Whitworth University 2-0 inside the Pine Bowl to finish the weekend unbeaten.
"We're super proud of the performance by the team today!" said Head Coach
Seth Spidahl.
"We made some adjustments from game one to game two and the players' soccer IQ was very good today!"
The Lutes (1-2-1) opened the scoring in the 37th minute with
Vera Panescu-Reich providing a spark off the bench and finding the back of the net off an assist from
Jami Hughes. PLU's lead remained 1-0 until fellow substitute
Vivian Shinall tacked on an insurance score in the 76th minute to seal the win.
PLU outgunned the host Pirates (0-1-1) 12-5 in shots, including a 4-2 advantage in shots on target.
Cassidy Crosswhite nabbed two saves in 90 minutes between the posts to net the clean sheet in her first start of the season. The Lute defense held Whitworth off the scoreboard the entire weekend, a stretch that spanned 200 minutes.
"We got our second shutout, and scored our first goals so progress is being made. We will look to continue to get better as we still have lots to improve on but again credit to the players on their attitude and effort despite a tough start to the season. They have been awesome with their resilience, and we're looking forward to continuing to grow."
Pacific Lutheran is back on the pitch on Saturday, making the short trip across town to face the University of Puget Sound. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
