Leong’s Goal Propels Lutes

TACOMA, Wash. – For the second straight season, the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team was victorious on the campus of crosstown rival University of Puget Sound.  Freshman Alyssa Leong's goal in the 79th minute put the Lutes up 1-0 and the PLU defense held the Logger offense scoreless in the shutout victory.

"It's a great start to the weekend for our team," said PLU head coach Seth Spidahl.  "We had a good week of preparation and continue to improve, which in the big picture is what motivates teams and players.  How good can you be on the day?"

It was the first career goal for the freshman from Honolulu, who has been one of the Lutes' top playmakers this season, but had yet to find the back of the net.

"I'm excited that Alyssa got her first college goal as she has been working and oh so close," said Spidahl.

Stellar defense has been the key for the Lutes as of late, as they have shut out their last three opponents and allowed just two goals in five games.  The Lutes held the Loggers to just six shots on the day and both on goal were turned away.  PLU also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

"It was a job well begun, but job half done," said Spidahl.  We need to enjoy today, but keep our 'heads down' and get ready for the last spring contest against UPS tomorrow.  It's the seniors last time playing them so it will be significant.  Go Lutes!"

With the victory, PLU improved to 2-2-1 on the season and snapped the Loggers' four-match winning streak to start the season.  The Lutes will look to even up the season series at 2-2 when the two teams kickoff tomorrow at UPS at 11:00 a.m.
