Women's Tennis Downs Loggers in Season Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team flexed its muscles against crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound on Tuesday evening, taking down the Loggers 6-3 in the season opener held at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.

The Lutes (1-0) got off to a fast start, winning two of the three doubles matches. Taylor Stokes and Bayley Gochanour collected an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 position while first-years Jillian Chong and Meggie Burnett outfoxed the Loggers' No. 3 tandem of Laura Scneidman and Ainsley Nelson, 8-7, for their first collegiate win.

"The Lutes showed up to play today," said Head Coach Cheri Campbell. "We started out strong with our two doubles wins and then continued to see depth in singles."

In singles, Sydney Cameron earned an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position at the expense of Lia Van Steeter while Gochanour made quick work of her opponent at No. 3, walking away with an 8-0 win. Stokes prevailed 8-3 at No. 4 while Chong captured an 8-2 decision at No. 5.

"Highlights were seen with Bayley and Taylor's doubles and singles wins along with first-year Jilian who won in doubles with Meggie and dominated her singles match at the No. 5 spot. I'm excited to see how the Lutes' hard work in practice has paid off."

The Lutes are back on the court on March 6, trekking to Forest Grove, Oregon to face Pacific University. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
